Friday, September 15th is National Concussion Awareness Day

Concussions have become an epidemic in the United States, with millions of mild traumatic brain injuries occurring each year. National Concussion Awareness Day® is recognized on the third Friday of each September yearly and is recognized by the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA).
Every 11 seconds someone in the United States will suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

A concussion is a mild form of brain injury and should be taken seriously.

Brain Injury is the leading cause of death and disability in the World.
According to a poll by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center nearly 9 out of 10 adults in the US can’t correctly define a concussion. The Center for Disease Control defines a concussion as “a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth.”

Up to 50% of concussions go undiagnosed and untreated. Symptoms commonly last 7-10 days, for some
people concussion symptoms can persist longer, called Post-Concussion Syndrome. Concussion Syndrome can last for weeks, months or even years.

Amy Zellmer is a TBI survivor and award-winning author of Life With a Traumatic Brain Injury: Finding the Road Back to Normal. She sits on the Brain Injury Advisory Council through the BIAA and is a frequent contributor to Huff Post, and was recently featured in Experience L!fe magazine, along with her Doctor, Jeremy Schmoe DC. She is a national speaker and a driver in the movement for TBI awareness.
